NZ UPDATE: COLIN SLATER |
22 July 2001 |
|
Last week started out cold and mildly snowy down south and up north. On Friday it all went to total custard. The biggest southerly this season, and certainly one of the biggest in the last 10 years, whipped across the country for the last 3 days. It started snowing real heavy up North at Ruapehu on Thursday and just cleared overnight. They received about 1.5m of snow in that dump and it's as clear as a bell this morning. The off trail will be very wind affected as they managed to rack up a whopping 203.4KMH wind gust on Saturday evening! The same front passed over most of the South Island but amazingly missed Queenstown and Wanaka except for about 15-20cm of snow. Hutt must have got well over 1.5m in the storm and places like Olympus, Craigieburn, Dobson, Ohau etc are reporting the same. Once they have bombed and cleared this will be the best week so far. Ruapehu are reporting this is the biggest dump in the shortest time for 15 years. (1.5m in 30-40 hours). It's also remaining very cold which is good as it will allow the snow to sit down, normally a Nor'Wester comes in after snow but in this case the direction was different. There's supposed to be
more on the way next week as well so that's all good.
