NZ UPDATE: COLIN SLATER

16 August 2001

Well well, just when we thought winter was going nicely the biggest southerly ever rocks through town.

Between Tues and Wed it blew up to 140kmh, dumped snow everywhere, made 12m high waves in the Cook Straight and caused general carnage all over the place.

Today the whole of the volcanic plateau in the North Island is cut off because of snow. Whakapapa and Turoa have been shut most of the week because of the winds and snow, they reckon about 40cm has stuck to the hill, in National park there's about a foot lying on the ground with big drifts of metres.

Down South, Hutt got a decent drop and looks awesome today as it has blown through and is as clear as a bell. Coronet and the Remarks also got a good covering at the same time. Snow showers are still blowing through as we speak in Wellington. So its still all stacking up and keeping the regular snow thing happening - which is nice.

Yours coldly

Col
