NZ UPDATE: COLIN SLATER

15 October 2001

Well we thought that summer had finally arrived and that indeed the winter was all done. Most of the southern skifields are shut now bar Mt Hutt, in the North Island Whakapapa and Turoa are still going.

The surprise was that it's been freezing since last Sunday and Hutt has had about 30cm of fresh dry snow in the last couple of days, they've had a bit up north as well. This isn't actually that surprising, the fact that most places are shut is as Labour weekend (20/21/22) is usually the last weekend of the season.

Word on the streets is that Whakapa and Turoa may be open through November, Hutt will probably do its weekend thing after Labour weekend, thats where it opens weekends only...

So there we go, winter 2001 is finally coming to an end. For those of you not here this year why don't you save your pennies, leave behind normality and come down south for a spot of skiing in
the off season. Look out for my skiers guide to NZ which will appear soon - all the top tips and advice to survive a season in NZ.
