NZ UPDATE

9 May 2001

Anticipation for the season here in NZ is high as we have just come out of, or are coming out of one of the hottest and driest summers ever so are hanging out for a bit of snow action.

The long range forecast procured from the Met service is for a cold winter with average precipitation levels, slightly higher in the south.

I suppose the main thing that has kicked off this year is the season pass price war, it all started last year with the North Island fields offering stupidly cheap prices pre season but this year things have got stupid.

Now you can get a season pass for Mt Hutt, Coronet and the Remarkables for $299, for those of you mathmatically challenged that's about 93 quid or roughly approximates to 18.5 bottles of Steinlager at the Walkabout! And that's for a season pass.

You can get Whakapapa and Turoa for $299 as well, Treble Cone for $249, basically you name it and you'll get a pass for < 300 bucks which is amazing.

The other thing is that if you fancy doing a cheap season now is probably the time especially with the NZ dollar being roughly aligned to Monopoly.

Other news ..
Hutt has reshaped the Quad and built a bungy jump off Kea rock (I mean come on, now we can't ski off it - BOOO), Coronet has laid loads more snow guns, most of the other resorts are working away. Whakapapa has been bought by Turoa, or Rhuapehu Alpine lifts to be exact and they are proposing to link the resorts in the next few years which would be good, this year it's a guided traverse whatever that means.

So all in all shaping up. The weather's changed and by crikey it's actually rained which means Wellington has had about 5cm since January, not good.

It's being unseasonably hot down there so we might have to wait for the ground to cool a little before the snow really sits up. Just hanging out for it to start late this month all miracles going to plan or at least early next month!

Cheers

Colin
