NZ UPDATE - JAMES DAFFURN |
6 August 2001 |
|
A good base is now set in the Saddle (Basin), with the lower slopes still struggling with occasional death traps, involving sheet ice which is met by artificial snow and ice again! Which subsequently gives you a false sense of security, and makes sure you hit the deck with great force! So my advice is if your ability allows keep to the upper slopes and enjoy the death defying run home! Most of the Rip Curl World Heli Challenge competitors have arrived! Allowing a two week window for there three events, Chinese Downhill (a race off piste from the top of the mountain to the bottom in the quickest time, simple!), a Big Air which will be set here in Wanaka's town centre, and freestyle which involves descending down cliff faces! As you can see they're not the most normal of people so the town is beginning to liven up again! Rookie Academy news is sad to pronounce our very own 'eddie the eagle,' a mad kiwi named tarker who is obsessed with kickers and getting big air. Was doing his stuff on friday, namely trying a back flip for the first time and managed to break his jaw! So a big hello to tarker in Dunedin hospital, great jump mate! Otherwise Wanaka is like usual, buzzing, hope all of you out there are enjoying a good summer! See you soon no doubt, See you soon!
