COLIN SLATER'S NZ UPDATE

19 October 2000

.. looks like this will be the last report for the season coming you live from the bottom of Rhuapehu. Sorry, I'm not going skiing today - it's biking instead - too hot!

Well we've made it through a bizarre season pretty well - heaps of snow right at the start then a nothing, then loads near the end. The seasons are definitely pushing out later.

So the snow up here is good at the moment, it's Labour weekend here this weekend which is always a blast with everyone going a bit rad really. Summer starts next week basically. The base here is good and snow is great spring corn. I know the same conditions are at Hutt which has about 2m base still and has been getting seriously regular dumps of snow - they could go till November.

...but they are staying open until Tuesday and that's it! AAaaaarrggh - no more snow and with the NZ dollar being worth approximately 0.00000001 US dollars the chances of going to the States are, well NIL :-(

So at the moment we've got Turoa and Whakapapa open in the NI, Hutt, Porter Heights (maybe) and the Remarks open down south. The weather forecast is for four days of primo sun and no wind (for once). I'll ride today, ski tomorrow and go surfing over the weekend.

Hope you all enjoy the northern winter and for those of you in the UK the crappy weather :-)

Till next year, take it easy

Colin
