COLIN SLATER'S NZ UPDATE

1 September 2000

Well what's been going on since the last update?

We had a massive storm cycle build up about the 17th August which culminated in an almighty dumping of snow over most of the Canterbury and Arthurs Pass ranges.

This meant Mt Hutt got a whopping record 180cm snowfall in 60 hours. I managed to sneak up early on the first day open and can tell you it was primo, blue skies, no Billys and 180 to play with.Okay so about 150 had packed down into a nice base but there was still 30cm fresh frost dried pow up there and it was sweet.

They got about another 20cm last night so it's all going off there, particular hotspots are the S Face, and the SW Face is just amazing....

Was down in Wanaka and took the time to go to Cardrona and TC. Cardrona has really nice frost dried snow (-12C at night there - Brrr) with a good coverage - check out the terrain park though. Treble Cone is slightly scraped but the top T and the Double chair are looking good.

I know that the Queenstown ranges kinda missed the whole big dump but managed to eke out about 40cm so they're still tracking along.

Up North the fields are going OK , they both managed to get a bit from the storm but nowhere near as spectaular as their counterparts in Canterbury.

Special mentions go to the Arthurs Pass clubfields, Craigieburn, Olympus and Broken River - one word - Awesome. Just don't tell anyone that they've got such good snow !!

Hopefully this will keep going and we can ski into November, now wouldn't that be choice!    Until the next time....
